Yesterday, four Wave Gliders—self propelled robots, each about the size of a dolphin—left San Francisco for a journey that combined will total 60,000 kilometers. Built by Liquid Robotics, the robots will travel together to Hawaii, then split into pairs, one pair heading to Japan, the other to Australia. Waves will power their propulsion systems and the sun will power the sensors that will be measuring things like water salinity, temperature, clarity, and oxygen content; collecting weather data, and gathering information on wave features and currents. It’s not going to be an easy journey—the little robots will face rough weather and have to dodge big ships.
Fraley’s Robot Repair Shop
Posted in Uncategorized with tags image, like, robot on 22 Nov 2011 by mckenzeeFraley’s Robot Repair is a fictional business set up as a public art installation. The Artist behind this installation is Toby Atticus Fraley, a multidisciplinary artist based in the Pittsburgh area.
This installation opened for a year long run on Duquesne Light Light Up Night®, November 18, 2011.
The shop depicts what appears to be a robot repair shop where the owners have left for vacation, leaving robots in various stages of repair, including one peering through the store windows longing for life in the outside world. The scene appears to be set in the future, where robot ownership is commonplace, with a 1950’s aesthetic. Interactive QR codes and a website allow smartphone and internet users a behind-the-scenes view of the creation of the art piece. Those who frequent the area will see the installation change and evolve over the course of the year.
Project Pop Up Pittsburgh is a new initiative of Mayor Luke Ravenstahl with the Urban Redevelopment Authority, Department of City Planning and Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership. Project grants were awarded to for-profit and nonprofit ventures including art installations, retail shops, restaurants, educational initiatives or a combination.

Posted in Uncategorized with tags holiday, robot, robotmas on 14 Oct 2011 by mckenzeeI have declared February 11th, the most 42nd Day of the Year, to be Robotmas, in honor of the original BBC airing of R.U.R., the very first televised science fiction program ever, on February 11, 1938.
It being the 42nd day of the year is a coincidence, I’m sure.
